John Stebbins (1647-1724) served with Capt. Lathrop during King Philip's War and survived the battle at Bloody Brook. He was one of the permanent settlers of Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1682. His house was burned in the attack of 1704 and his entire family was taken to Canada; only he, his wife, and one son John, were redeemed. The grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren continued to occupy property near this site until the early 20th century. The photograph of the marker was taken about 1910 by Mary and Frances Allen.
