Dear Ma:-

You donít need to get
mad because I donít write more.
I sent the banner to Natalie today
and it took me over a half an hour
to write one page so you can see how
hard it is for me to wright. of course
I can tell you what time I get up
every morning what, nectie I wear
and what I eat for breakfast, but I
shouldent think you would want to
know those things. as for writing about
marks they are so low that I dont

This four-page letter of college freshman Tom Ashley to his mother in nearby Deerfield, written in the spring of 1913, is a familiar litany of problems common to first-year college students. Ashley, in his first year at Amherst College, is beleaguered by problems with his studies, his clothes, and his weight and is certain that anything he does say in a letter will not meet with his mother's approval. He repeats, after each "story," " so there is nothing to write about."
