Will Hutchins Chosen President.

Will Hutchins has been elected president of the Greenfield Arts and Crafts Society, taking the place of Miss Edith Lowell, who has resigned. The society is to have salesrooms open all the time at the "Sign of the camera" on Federal street, in connection with the photograph studio conducted by Miss Lowell and Mrs. Eaton. The rooms in Pond's block are to be given up. The society is to be represented at the arts and crafts anniversary exhibit at Boston, and all exhibits for that occasion should be sent in by the 28th. The society officers say that there is a good opportunity for any women who can do good work at netting, to sent their product to the Aquidneck cottage industries at Newport. Two of the workers of the society are doing this now and the work of about a dozen could be used. For a small piece as much as $1 is paid, but very good work is required.

Will Hutchins was a painter and teacher at the Deerfield Academy. He wrote the 1909 outdoor drama, performed at Deerfield, "Jeanne D'Arc at Vaucouleurs." The Greenfield Arts and Crafts Society was part of a larger movement in the United States that sought to combat modernism with an emphasis on handcrafted goods. For many, the items that they created offered a good opportunity for sales and a bit of fame. Here, the Greenfield society emphasizes its participation in a show in Boston. The arts and crafts movement's first major society in America was Boston's Society of Arts and Crafts, founded 1897. Boston remained the center of the movement until the late 1910s, when it began to lose market to New York and elsewhere.
