SOUTH DEERFIELD
SOUTH DEERFIELD TO HAVE CONFERENCE ON HEALTH IN SCHOOLS
South Deerfield, Dec. 7--Under the auspices of the Deerfield League of Women Voters, a series of conferences on "Our Public Schools," are being held, the second of which will take place Thursday afternoon at 2.30 at the Deerfield High school and will be a conference of state and health officials with Deerfield citizens on the state program for healthy school children. The state district-health officer, Dr. Howard E. Miner, will speak on "What Has the State Department of Public Health to Do with Deerfield?" The state consultant to the community nurse, Dr. Fredrika Moore, will speak on "A School Health Program." Deerfield's school physician, Dr. William G. Watt, will talk on "What I Am Trying to Do in Deerfield." The state consultant, to school nurse, Miss Vera H. Brooks, will have for her subject, "School Nursing in State and Town.

Each speaker will occupy 10 minutes, after which a 10 minute discussion will be held. By these conferences a better understanding will be given the citizen regarding his part in coinciding with state laws for the health of children, thus making a race of healthy school children and in time a race of healthy American citizens. Andrew S. Thomson, superintendent of schools, and the school committee are co-operating with the conferences.

This 1924 conference on public health in the schools came during a time when there was a great deal of public concern about the health of youthful Americans. This concern has remained constant in most times, but in this era these worries were often expressed in racial terms. Here, the major objective is stated as "making a race of healthy school children and in time a race of healthy American citizens." In many places in the United States during this era this emphasis on race was an outgrowth of the eugenics movement.
