The Allen sisters captured the Colonial Revival view of Puritan life in this photograph titled, "The Letter of the Law," ID Label: The twentieth -century writer H.L. Mencken wrote that the Puritans of the seventeenth century lived weighted down by "the fear that someone, somewhere might be happy." The Allen sisters captured this Colonial Revival view of Puritan life when they posed the Reverend John Spooner as a Puritan minister. Titled, "The Letter of the Law," the photograph shows the early twentieth-century view of Puritans as being stern and unforgiving.
