The precarious financial condition of the new nation made supplying Revolutionary troops with even the bare essentials of food and clothing a daunting task. Ordinary Americans supported the war effort by providing clothing and food as well as by paying taxes. These residents of Deerfield, Massachusetts, pledged to supply shoes, shirts and breeches for Deerfield militiamen in 1778.
