By 1800, many people purchased fabric and sewing notions but many women and girls also continued to use tape looms to weave narrow bands, or "tape". The weaver held the loom between her knees as she worked. Some uses of tapes included garters to hold up stockings or decorative edging for other textiles and garments such as hats. The heart carved into this tape loom suggests that an affectionate male friend or relative made it.
