During the late 18th century the use of silk, satin, and velvet became popular for pieced quilts, known as "crazy" quilts. Because the fabrics were delicate, they had to be stitched onto a stronger background fabric. Some are truly wild with rich silks and a wide range of embroidery holding them together. This example shows a creative touch - a border made of netting - and may have been used, as most "crazy" quilts were, more as a living room decoration than as a bed covering.
