Deacon John Johnstone Greenough owned and operated the Greenough Pickling Company in Deerfield for over 55 years. He started the business in 1870 and manufactured vinegar, pickles, and horseradish. He packaged the horseradish in glass bottles which were sold in boxes. The bottle is unmarked and has a shape characteristic of condiment bottles of the early 20th century. The bottle has a screw top finish, a technology that came into use in the early 20th century. We can tell it's a horseradish bottle because of the text on the box which is clearly marked "The Green O Horse Radish." We know that the product was made in 1925 ( or after) because the box is marked "1870 1925 55 Years IN THE BUSINESS." Pickles are still made today in pickle factories in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, from cucumbers grown by local farmers.
