This wrapper, or dressing gown, would have been worn by a woman at home. The unfitted front could indicate that the wrapper was worn for maternity. A belt or sash, however, could have provided a more finished look. The wool fabric, in a boteh or stylized flower motif more commonly known as a paisley design, indicates that this garment was probably a winter garment. Although worn in an informal setting, the gown illustrates excellent dressmaking principles; the wool paisley fabric is matched up on the sleeves, garment front, and back. The large, leg o' mutton sleeves help to date the gown to the mid-1890s, about 1894-1896.
