This annual report from the school committee of Deerfield, Massachusetts, proudly notes the opening of the new, two-story, multi-roomed grammar school in South Deerfield. The superintendent notes its advantages and contrasts it to the facilities in Old Deerfield a few miles up the road. In the first decades of the 20th century, the nation made a heavy investment in education, prompted in part by a movement known as the Progressives. The school system, it was felt, offered the best route to the future for all citizens of the commonwealth, and new facilities offered the best environment for learning.
