Approximately 16.5 million American men and women served in the armed forces during the World War II (WWII), from September 16, 1940 through July 25, 1947. These participants represented one-third of the then male population, 15 years and older. Among the more than 16 million WWII service men and women, 70% served in the Army (including Army air forces), 26% in the Navy, and 4% in the Marines. Approximately 73% of WWII military personnel served overseas. This is the WWII Army registration card of Frank R. Dahowski, Jr., born in 1910, and one of eight children of Frank and Sophie Dahowski, emigrants from Warsaw, Poland in 1898, and residents of Montague, Massachusetts. A 1928 graduate of Deerfield Academy, he married Olga Kostecky in 1947; they were married 41 years before Frank died in 1988. Frank was employed by the Luey and Abercrombie grocery business of Greenfield before enlisting in the service in 1942.
