The travels of Eleanor Roosevelt, the President's wife, brought the New Deal and the federal government into the lives of ordinary Americans. Far more active than previous "first ladies," her visits to coal mines, factories, farms and work relief projects created a direct link between Washington DC and common people. Photographs of her visits, such as this one in the Greenfield Daily Recorder-Gazette created an image of an active and caring presidential administration. After Franklin Roosevelt's death in 1935, Mrs. Roosevelt played a key role in the creation of the United Nations.
