Chauncey Thomas (1877-1950) was a talented potter who briefly worked in Deerfield, Massachusetts during the height of the town's participation in the Arts and Crafts movement. The variety and skill of his works is evident. Thomas was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, a style widely featured in the art periodicals of his day. This piece shows the influence of Japanese and Chinese style, with its irregular and deliberately artlessly applied glaze.
