Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, opened in January 1799, and this "Catalogue of the scollars" [sic] shows forty-nine students enrolled for the first quarter term that winter. Although the practice of admitting females was not standard among academies at the time - they were not accepted at either of the Phillips academies - eight female students were among Deerfield's forty-nine. Fifteen of the first students came from Deerfield families. All of the students studied reading, writing, and English grammar. The academy's practice of keeping enrollment lists was short-lived, stopping when it closed temporarily for construction in 1810 and not resuming after it reopened.
