W.E.B. Dubois graduated from Harvard College in 1890 and went on to become the pre-eminent spokesman for African Americans up to that time. Well-educated and articulate, he taught economics and history at Atlanta University, and published, throughout his life, books and articles on the lives and culture of black Americans. He lists as one of his achievements his membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
