Practical Art Lectures.
The Arts and Crafts Society is planning to
have several lectures this season upon art
themes treated in their most practical
aspects, in such a way that the average run
of people could easily apply to them to their
own problems of home decoration. The first
of these is to be given Wednesday at 3.30 at
the Arts and Crafts rooms, by Will Hutchins,
he will talk about picture framing. He expects to illustrate his ideas by examples of
good and bad framing. The subject will appeal to all in any way interested in improving the artistic tone of their homes.
Especial interest will be felt in some pictures of F. Wilbur Murphy, which will be
sent up from Winchester. Mr. Murphy is a
painter who has been making frames himself to suit each particular painting. No
tickets will be sold in advance or other notice
sent to members but the lecture is intended
for anyone who is interested whether members or not. The lecture is to be followed by
a social hour.

The Arts and Crafts movement was many things to many people, but above all, it was a movement to make art accessible to everyone. Creative expression such as interior design, decorative arts (pottery, basket making, weaving, etc) needed to reflect the natural world and be compatible with it. Framing a painting was a subject that the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Society came back to several times. Will Hutchins brought in artists and framers to instruct members of the Society and the general public. The frame, it was felt, must harmonize with the painting, separating it from the world around it in the gentlest manner. It must also work with the interior design of the home.
