GREENFIELD, MASS. Jan. 9th., 06 190

Hon. George Sheldon,
18 West Cedar St., Boston, Mass.

My dear Sir:--

It is indeed a cause of regret that you are unable to furnish
us with data regarding your title previous to 1667. We were in hopes that
you would be able to trace the title back to the time of the deluge, or at
least the beginning of the Christian era, in which case, with the services
of an astute attorney, we could perhaps trace it back far enough to make the
present title reasonably safe. You will at once see the necessity of care
in this matter in view of the facts that eminent scientists now claim that
man originated somewhere in North America, probably in the Deerfield Meadows,
therefore the possibility arises that some of the late lamented Adam’s descen-
dents may at some time claim an interest in this property. Enclosed you
will find instrument granting us right of way and also check for [ ].00.
Kindly sign enclosed instrument opposite of seal, go before a justice of
the Peace and have him take your acknowledgement and return same to me at
Greenfield.

Very truly yours

The letter from the Connecticut Valley Street Railway Co. to George Sheldon of Deerfield, Massachusetts, speaks of an enclosed check to pay for the right of way they had requested. The signature of the writer has been torn away. The date appears to be 1906, well after the trolley has come to Deerfield. The tone of the letter is extremely sarcastic when it addresses Mr. Sheldon's background.
